Finnish Chemigate to reduce their plant’s CO2 emissions from energy use by around 20% – supported by Caverion

Chemigate partners with Caverion to significantly reduce emissions from the energy use at its Lapua plant in Finland. The CO2 emission reduction of around 20% (>900 tonnes) will be achieved as the plant’s production line gets a heat recovery solution during 2025. The new solution will significantly reduce the use of propane at the plant.

"We are taking a really significant leap forward in reducing the emissions of our plant. This solution is great and tailored to our needs. Our partner Caverion is responsible for the design, overall implementation and, in the future, remote control and performance monitoring of the system. The solution uses a natural refrigerant, isobutane, which means it also meets the requirements of the evolving refrigerant legislation. We are committed to environmental and emission reduction actions throughout our organisation," says Harri Heikkinen, Head of Production, Chemigate.

Waste heat recovery is the key

Caverion is implementing a heat recovery and heat pump system for the Lapua plant’s production line. The system will collect waste heat from the exhaust air of the drying process and from the air compressors. The heat will then be transferred for use in heating the supply air of the production process.

"Finnish industry still has huge potential to reduce emissions by using waste heat from production processes. Chemigate's Lapua plant is a great example of a strong commitment to environmental goals and sustainable choices along the value chain. I hope that our partnership will continue to expand in the future," says Riku Mandelin, Head of Projects, Caverion Finland.

The Chemigate Group is a Finnish company that manufactures and sells bio-based products for technical use, based on starch and other polysaccharides. Their vision is to be the most responsible, reliable, and sought-after partner in the markets. Chemigate’s primary customer base comprises the Nordic paper and cardboard industries. Chemigate’s Lapua plant employs around 50 people.
