Caverion to provide building systems for VVO’s largest-ever residential building in Finland

Caverion and VVO have signed an agreement on the provision of building systems for a VVO residential property to be built in Vantaa’s Tikkurila district in Helsinki. The contract covers the design management and implementation of plumbing, ventilation, electrical and building automation. The value of the contract is approximately EUR 4 million. The total value of the entire project is approximately EUR 30 million.

The new residential building, As. Oy Lauri Korpisen katu 10, will be located in the vicinity of Tikkurila railway station, next to the future Tikkurila travel centre. With a total of 188 apartments, the building project is the largest in VVO’s history.

“VVO is Finland’s leading rental housing company. Energy efficiency plays a significant role in VVO’s operations, as the share of property maintenance costs represented by energy costs has increased substantially throughout the 2000s. In our new construction projects, we look for solutions that ensure appropriate and pleasant living conditions in an energy-efficient manner. The project on Lauri Korpisen katu will feature a many such solutions, including automatic demand-controlled ventilation. This means that the residents of the building will not have to actively worry about maintaining the right conditions and energy efficiency,” says Anna Ritonummi, Project Manager at VVO.

Technologically advanced solutions

The starting point for the planning of the project was energy efficiency and the increasingly stringent energy standards applied to buildings. The building systems solutions selected for the project combine energy efficiency with ease of living. Indoor air conditions, such as heating and ventilation, have been afforded particular attention. The advanced building automation system that will be installed in the building enables highly specific control, for example to adjust ventilation or the floor heating in wet rooms of an individual residential unit while the unit’s residents are away.

“In cooperation with VVO, we have sought the best technical solutions for energy-efficient living. For instance, the building will feature three different types of ventilation machines. Our goal is to use the ventilation machines to obtain information on the differences between technologies in terms of annual efficiency and reliability,” says Petri J. Lehtinen, Unit Director at Caverion.

The building will use renewable energy in the form of solar power, which will cover a significant proportion of the electricity requirements of ventilation machines and pumps.

“The building’s energy consumption will be measured by consumption category. The aim is to use accurate measurement to improve the adjustability of building systems and obtain detailed information on actual consumption during use. This information will also allow us to further improve our productised solutions,” Petri Lehtinen adds.
