Caverion delivers building systems to the city theatres of Cologne in Germany

Caverion Deutschland has been commissioned to install the ventilation and air-conditioning facilities as part of the re-development project of the city theatres in Cologne. The total value of the project is approximately EUR 7.5 million. In the coming months, Caverion will install systems in the opera house and theatre, which are both listed buildings.

In order to develop the district heating network, the company will use two heat exchangers, each with a heating capacity of 1.450 KW. For the ventilation system, Caverion will install a total of 32 air-handling units, which have a power output between 2,000 and 48,000 m³/h. Various heat recovery systems will be used for this, which will ensure a pleasant temperature both back stage and front of house.

The demands placed on the ventilation systems with regards to acoustics and comfort in the auditoriums of the opera house and theatre is very high. Despite the heat generated by people and lighting installations, the objective is to use conditioned supply air in order to create a comfortable environment in all areas of the buildings, including spectator boxes.

Caverion has already been able to put its knowledge and expertise into practice at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre. Additionally, in 2010, Caverion developed a ventilation system that optimally eliminates draughts and minimises energy costs in Caverion’s own research and development centre in Aachen, Germany.
