Buildings in the EU are responsible for about 36% of the European Union’s CO₂ emissions.

An important driver for change is the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, or EPBD. This directive is one of the EU’s main legislative instruments designed to improve the energy efficiency of buildings and to increase their level of intelligence through automation.

The revision of the EPBD is one of the key elements of the European Green Deal. Together with the recently updated Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), these two directives are key to implementing the long-term objectives of reducing Europe's carbon emissions by 55% by 2030 and of the EU being climate neutral by 2050.
